Institution of Highways and Transportation 2008

Judged that Durakerb “stood out above all others and that widespread adoption would significantly reduce personal injuries, is innovative and has environmental merits” at the recent IHT Award ceremony, Phil Sutton received the IHT/Highways Agency Health & Safety at Work Award on 5th June 2008.

The revolutionary Durakerb was also Commended in the IHT/Halcrow Environmental Award and the IHT/Ringway Award for Innovation. The judges commented that Durakerb provided “a local solution to a national problem” and was felt to be particularly innovative in both functional and environmental terms. Taking a waste product which does not break down in landfill and turning it into a serviceable product which has been used on numrous highway schemes across the Uk. It is considered to be a very sustainable contribution to the environment. The product has been methodically developed from a vision to production, and provides substantial benefits when compared with conventional kerbs. Durakerb has been installed in anincreasing number of applications, including the A1 London-Edinburgh-Thurso trunk road in Northumberland early in 2007. Phil Sutton, Director, was highly delighted to receive this prestigious award, doubly so as the product has also recently been awarded the HAPAS (Highway Authorities’ Product Approval Scheme) by the British Board of Agrément.

Judges comments:

"It comes as a bit of a surprise to consider how much trouble is caused by the ordinary handling of the standard kerbstone. These objects require the presence of lifting equipment on already congested sites, with all the hassle and hazards that implies. Durakerb's answer was brilliantly simple: a light "stone" made from a blend of recycled polymers that is easier and safer to handle and therefore faster to lay. In fact, the kerbs can be transported in the back of an ordinary car and carried in one hand; when cut they produce no dust and when laid they do not chip, eliminating the need for remedial repairs. All in all a significant contribution to the industry's health and efficiency."
